Fort Laramie is one of my favorite historic sites. This is a view of the mercantile on the post. How amazing it is that any of us can walk into the very room where Red Cloud, William T. Sherman, Phil Sheridan, Jim Bridger, Crazy Horse, Mark Twain, Alonzo Delano, Henry Morton Stanley, J.E.B. Stuart, American Horse, Joseph Johnston, William Cody, Frederick Lander, Caspar Collins, John C. Fremont, Henry Carrington, Jack Slade, William Fetterman, Alexander Gardner, Jack Morrow, Richard Burton, Man-afraid-of-his-horses, Albert Bierstadt, Alfred Terry, Spotted Tail, George Crook, Frank James, George Donner, and a host of other figures important in the history of the 19th century stood. Just about anyone who followed the emigrant trails or the buffalo herds that passed by the post stopped in this place. Now, that is one powerful location to get in touch with history!
