Is it safe? Many Americans, especially in the Northeast, are wondering if the time has come where they can swap the snow tires off of the family vehicle and mothball all those heavy winter coats and hats for a while. As we are positioned to pass the 150th anniversary of the assassination (April 15th), it looks like the nasty winter of 2014-2015 is about to enter the archives. The people in the Northeast had their first real winter in decades and instead of looking at it as a tribulation it might be best to view it as something your forests needed for their overall health. Extended cold keeps bugs such as the bark beetle from wiping out the forests. There are further benefits to heavy snowpacks that will help vital plants and animals hang on in that region during this period of increasing global temperatures.
Here in California I didn't see a snowflake fall at our home all winter. I had to go to Nebraska to enjoy the ballet of shimmering snowflakes. Until we can get a handle on the increasing temperatures, this will be our reality. In many ways the Northeast is to be envied for the winter they had.
